Thirty former members of the New People’s Army in Negros Oriental received financial assistance from the provincial government Wednesday to help them rebuild their lives after their surrender.

A rebel returnee also received a big amount from the national government under the Guns-for-Cash program, while a woman got cash assistance for her house that was damaged during a recent encounter between rebel forces and soldiers.

The awarding of the financial aid was done at the joint signing of the declaration of Negros Oriental as “conflict manageable and development-ready” province.

Gov. Roel Degamo and Vice Gov. Mark Macias led the distribution of the financial assistance, in the presence of Secretary Voltaire Gazmin of the Department of National Defense, and other ranking officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Those who received P3,000 each as emergency/immediate cash assistance were Benmar Gutib of Datagon, Pamplona; Sanny Boy Sinda and Ramil Cadelina, Apoloy, Siaton; Romnick Dacal Dacal of Nagbalaye, Jory and Maribeth Lascuna of Talalak, all of Sta. Catalina; Langie Desmoparan of Alangilan, Sta. Catalina; Romy Banawa, Nagbinlod, Sta. Catalina; Bartolome Quitay, Mantiquil, Siaton; Danny Potane, Napacao, Siaton; Jorgie Quitay, Mantiquil, Siaton; Junny Dacal Dacal of Nagbalaye, Jarvie Edano - Talalak, and Marcelo Gallardo, Alfredo Recla, Marilou Angcon, Pedro Candilaza, and Rocelyn Namoco, all of Nagbinlod in Sta. Catalina;
Jessie Ragay of Sandulot, and Genie Labrador and Rosalina delos Santos, both of Tayak, all in Siaton; Joan and Joel Gajelloma of Najandig, Wyne Alegre, Arnel Aplicador, Jessie Potane, Lodie and Logie Espadilla, Federico Inoferio, all of Calango, Zamboanguita; and Rey Sayson of Balugo, Sibulan.

Winifreda Rabor, whose house was destroyed during an encounter between soldiers of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, and suspected NPA rebels in Balayong, Pamplona on April 3, was given P10,000.

Former NPA member Gregorio Manlangit received a check for P83,700 in exchange for the firearm he turned over during his surrender.

Degamo has repeatedly said that members of the NPA who wish to leave the underground movement and return to mainstream society will receive assistance to help them start their lives afresh.
