The 50th Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army (PA) in the northern part of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) on Monday said they remain vigilant in maintaining peace and order to assure a peaceful barangay elections on Oct. 28.
Lt. Col. Richard Sibayan, 50th IB commander, said towns like Sagada and Bontoc, which have border areas to the provinces of Abra and Kalinga still have some concerns on insurgency due to remnants of the New People's Army (NPA).
The forthcoming barangay elections is essential to the province's and country's further economic development and delivery of social services as the barangay serves as the smallest government unit.
Of the more than 300 barangays in CAR, only 46 were considered by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) as areas of concern for the forthcoming political exercise.
However, Sibayan said that recent sighting of the communist terrorists in some isolated areas in Mountain Province, including the May 13, 2013 ambush by NPA guerillas on soldiers helping to deliver ballots and election paraphernalia in Tabuk, Kalinga resulting in the death of three army soldiers, underscore their vigilance in the batallion's area of jurisdiction.
Last month, two members of the mobile force of the Police Regional Office Cordillera (PROCOR) were wounded when a police contingent chanced upon an NPA camp in Sagada,
A month before, a treacherous attack by the NPA on a group of police trainees in Tadian,
Sibayan assured that his officers and men will give utmost respect to human rights, and act as professional soldiers as they deal against the enemies of the State.
