Despite being in service for almost 30 years, the McDonnell Douglas MG-520 "Defender" attack helicopter demonstrated its close-air support capability during the 20-day Zamboanga City stand-off against Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
The latter provided air cover and fire support to the ground units which eventually contained the MNLF threat.
It's constant presence over the battlefield prevented cornered MNLF fighters from breaking out of their isolated positions in Barangays Sta. Barbara and Sta. Catalina.
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is known to operate between 12 to 16 models of the MG-520, according to military sources.
The PAF affair with the MG-520 started in the early 90's when 25 units of these excellent aircraft were delivered to the country.
It was used with great effect against New People's Army (NPA) rebels and lawless elements like the Abu Sayyaf Group for the past few years.
The MG-520 is derived from the MG-500 light utility helicopter.
It can be armed with .50 caliber heavy machines and air-to-ground rockets.
The aircraft carries a crew of two and is capable of flying to speed up to 160 miles per hour (257 kilometers per hour), making it ideal for close air support work.
Aside from their close air support role, PAF helicopters and other aerial assets like the Lockheed C-130 "Hercules" ensure that supplies will also get through the front aside from ensuring that wounded soldiers will be flown out and given adequate medical care in rear areas.
PAF spokesperson Col. Miguel Ernesto Okol said while the Air Force played a key role in containing the MNLF threat with its air strikes and logistic supports, credit is much due to the bravery and gallantry of the troops on the ground.
"(This win can be dedicated to the) proficiency and dedication of our soldiers (on the ground). (Aside from) good coordination and well thought of joint and combined planning and most of important of all, public support," he added.
