Soldiers repel NPA in Eastern Samar, 1 automatic rifle seized

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 1): Soldiers repel NPA in Eastern Samar, 1 automatic rifle seized

Troops from the 8th Infantry Division's 14th Infantry Battalion have driven off a New People's Army band in Barangay Tangbo, Arteche town, Eastern Samar Wednesday, military sources in Manila said Thursday.

Aside from this, the military also seized an M-16 automatic rifle and documents and personal items owned by the rebels.

Capt. Amado Gutierrez, 8th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the encounter took place around 1:45 p.m.

The exchange of fire between government forces and the rebels lasted for 10 minutes.

No losses were sustained by the military while the NPAs fled, taking with them an undetermined number of casualties.

Military sources did not say whether the soldiers pursued the rebels who had with them fellow rebels who might have been killed or wounded.

Earlier, the NPAs also suffered losses when troops from the 34th Infantry Battalion engaged the rebels in a 45-minute firefight last July 27.

The incident took place in Barangay Rombang, Laoang, Northern Samar.

During the encounter, a rebel fighter was killed and two M-16 automatic rifles were seized.

“The successive encounters in the past few days were results of reports coming from the people themselves who are tired of NPA intrusion in their communities, where they conduct extortion as well as threaten and harm those who do not yield to their whims and caprices," Gutierrez stressed.
