A soldier was wounded following a clash with alleged New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Matuguinao, Samar, according to a belated report from the Philippine Army.  Capt. Gene Orense, spokesman of the Army's 8th Infantry Division, said members of the 63rd Infantry Battalion fought with an undetermined number of rebels in Barangay Rizal at about 5 p.m., Monday. The 10-minute firefight left Private First Class Elwin Bert Paller wounded. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Prior to the encounter, soldiers discovered an alleged abandoned NPA camp in the hinterlands of Baraangay Del Rosario in the same town. Orense said the camp, with makeshift bunkers and a kitchen, could accommodate 45 rebels. “The Bayanihan team will continue its Peace and Development efforts inthe Municipality of Matuguinao amidst the series of armed encountersthat happened during the recent days," Lt. Col. Arvin Lagamon, 63rd IB commander, said.
