From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 2): Gunmen torch 2 houses, strafe others in
Maguindanao town
An armed conflict involving warring families in Datu Montawal, Maugindanao
erupted Thursday with two houses torched by the protagonists and a series of
gun-bursts sent civilians fleeing.
Col. Benjie Hao, chief of the 7th Infantry Battalion commander, no one was
hurt in the incident but the strafing forced civilians in Barangay Poblacion to
vacate their homes when gunmen arrived at past 7 p.m.
Witnesses said the civilians were resting following dinner when suddenly two
houses were engulfed by fire.
Following the conflagration, a series of gun burts ensued forcing many
residents, including children and women, to flee to safer grounds.
Hao said a long standing family feud involving two Muslim clans have
triggered on and off skirmishes in Poblacion Montawal.
Mayor Utto Montawal has requested the deployment of military personnel in the
town center to prevent the armed confrontation between protagonists from
happening again.
