NEGROS Occidental Governor Lacson revealed Monday, July 17, 2023, that the insurgency problem in the province was a “major concern” raised by the organizers of the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.
But Lacson said he assured the organizers of the security of the athletes who will participate if the province wins its bid to host the sports event.
He added that he assured the board that the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army will secure all athletes.
The security concerns are based on the reports of encounters between the military and the New People's Army (NPA) in Negros Occidental.
"I told them the site of the encounters is more than 80 kilometers from the Capital city of Bacolod. The reason the skirmishes are reported is that government forces are aggressive in its End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) campaign. ELCAC will not stop because we are making a bid to host the Palaro next year," the governor pointed out.
The result of the bidding will be announced by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte during the closing ceremonies of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa in Marikina on August 5.
The provincial government started renovating the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City in 2019.
The budget for the renovation of the sports facility was pegged around P150 million with the track and field oval worth P50 million.
Cebu City and Antique province are also bidding to host the games.
