CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao Norte – The head of Dawlah Islamiya (DI) in the Philippines is dead, police said Wednesday.

Police and military forces were about to serve warrants of arrest against Fahar Pumbaya Pangalian alias Abu Zacharia, head of the DI in the country, when he and his men opened fire and lobbed improvised bombs toward government forces at 1:30 a.m., according to Col. Robert Daculan, Lanao del Sur Police director.

Also killed in the clash was Joharie Sandab alias Morsid, the DI-Philippines sub-leader for finance and logistics, he said.

In his report to Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza, police director for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Daculan said government forces backed by armored personnel carriers were approaching Abu Zacharia’s location in Barangay Bangon, Marawi City, when his group resisted, triggering a firefight.

He said the followers of DI also tossed an improvised explosive device made of 60mm mortar and two hand grenades toward the operating troops that injured Private 1st Class Chrismar D. Tungpalal of the Army Scout Ranger Company.

“The firefight lasted for more than 10 minutes and Abu Zacharia is dead,” Daculan said.

Government forces recovered two M16A1 rifles and ammunition at the clash site.

Clearing operations were ongoing as of this posting.
