The Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu in collaboration with Local Government Units (LGU) of Panamao and Luuk of 2nd District in Sulu together with partner agencies initiated a Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) activity dubbed as “Football for Peace” held at Panglima Agga Elementary School, in Barangay Seit Lake Poblacion, Panamao, Sulu on July 2 to 3, 2022.
In a statement, Maj. Gen. Ignatius N. Patrimonio, Commander of JTF Sulu lauded the initiative of Marine Battalion Landing Team-7 led by its Commander Lt. Col. John Paul S. Jacla for their efforts to insulate the youth as vulnerable targets from the deceptive narratives of the Abu Sayyaf Group terrorist.
“This is a good opportunity for the younger generation to be more active on sports. It will give them a sense of direction and will keep them from harms way” said Maj. Gen. Patrimonio.
According to Col. Vicente Mark Anthony P. Blanco III, Commander of 4th Marine Brigade, the total of 50 participants from the two (2) municipalities were 7-12 years old. The initiative was intended to sustain the gains and maintain the momentum on peace and security campaign of the JTF Sulu in 2nd District.
“It is important that we invest our time to mold the character of the children for they are the next generation of Tausugs. Involving them in sport will give them a sense of discipline and responsibility at their young age,” said Col. Blanco.
The Football for Peace is a diplomatic sports movement facilitated by volunters of football enthusiast promoting their advocacy of uniting people through sports. They orchestrate peace tournament with local partners and schools utilizing football as effective tools to engage and influence some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach children and young people.
