Another member of the New People’s Army (NPA) communist terrorist group has voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Nueva Ecija on Sunday.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano T. De Leon, regional director of the Police Regional Office in Central Luzon (PRO-3), said on Monday that
a certain Ka Edwin, of Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija likewise yielded one Squires Bingham shotgun without serial number and three rounds of 12-gauge shotgun ammunition.

De Leon said Ka Edwin served as the rebel group's courier of foods and medicine in 2006. In 2007, the rebel had direct contact to NPA’s "Pakikisalamuha" program.

“He became full-time NPA member roaming in the mountainous areas of Nueva Ecija and Aurora a year after and from 2016, he settled in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija and served as an informant of NPA in the area,” de Leon said in official social media post.

Last Jan. 15, eight NPA members voluntarily surrendered to combined elements of military and police after localized peace negotiations in Nueva Ecija.

The group consists of five regular NPA members and three members of the Militia ng Bayan operating in Central and Southern Luzon.

The surrendered rebels yielded one M-14 rifle with three magazines and 30 rounds of live ammunition, one M-16 rifle with one magazine and nine rounds of live ammunition, and three caliber .38 pistols.

De Leon said the continuous surrender of NPA members to the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines is a clear manifestation of the effectiveness of the "whole-of--nation" approach to end insurgency being implemented in the region.

"With the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC)’s relentless efforts through local peace engagement activities such as information dissemination and situational interview, more active and former members of communist terrorist groups become aware of the opportunity to change their lives and correct the mistakes they have committed due to deception and at the same time, entice to avail of the government's programs,” he added.
