The Ministry of Social Services and Development of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MSSD-BARMM) has distributed livelihood assistance to 144 former members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the Sulu province, officials said Friday.

Lawyer Raisa Jajurie, MSSD minister, said each of the 144 former ASG members received PHP15,000 in livelihood assistance in Camp Gen. Teodulfo Bautista, which houses the Joint Task Force Sulu headquarters in Jolo, Sulu, on Thursday afternoon.

Jajurie said the cash assistance was intended as seed money for the livelihood projects of the ASG surrenderers, such as farming, fishing, aquaculture, poultry, and livestock raising.

It also aims to support the Localized Social Integration Program (LSIP) of the Joint Task Force Sulu, he added.

The LSIP is a joint program of Sulu’s provincial government and Joint Task Force Sulu, through the provincial and municipal task force to end local communist armed conflict.

Brig. Gen. William Gonzales, Joint Task Force Sulu commander, said the LSIP has three stages – return, reform, and reintegrate.

The first stage is the formal surrender of the ASG member to the military, police, or local government unit where he will be undergoing medical check-up and profiling.

The second is the reformation stage where he will undertake psycho-social intervention, non-formal education and training, and introduction to livelihood opportunities.

The third stage is the integration process where he will be granted livelihood assistance, enrolment in housing programs, and an active partner in advocating peace initiatives.
