A target-listed pusher who was tagged as a supporter of an Islamic State-inspired local terrorist group was killed in an operation on Wednesday in Polomolok town, South Cotabato province.

Lt. Col. Alex Joe Orcajada, Polomolok municipal police chief, said
suspect Conrad Casabal was slain in an encounter with operatives around 11:15 a.m. along the national highway in Barangay Glamang.

Operatives of the Police Regional Office-12’s intelligence division and the South Cotabato police subjected Casabal to an entrapment and managed to purchase a sachet of suspected shabu worth PHP500, Orcajada said.

However, he said the suspect drew a handgun and fired at the operating team after sensing he was dealing with law enforcers, who were backed by soldiers from the Army’s 5th Special Forces Battalion.

Orcajada said the brief firefight that ensued resulted in the fatal wounding of the suspect, who was eventually declared dead upon arrival in a nearby hospital.

Recovered from the suspect were a sachet of suspected shabu, PHP500 marked bill and a homemade pistol, police said.

Casabal included in the inter-agency drug watchlist in the area was already arrested in 2017 for drug pushing, Orcajada said.

“According to intelligence reports, he had been supporting the Nilong group financially,” he said, referring to the Dawlah Islamiyah’s Nilong sub-group, which operates in Polomolok and the neighboring areas.

The group has been tagged as behind the series of criminal and terror activities in the area, including the bomb attack in front of a lying-in clinic here in September 2018 that left eight people wounded.
