CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao — Soldiers of 37th Infantry Battalion foiled an attempt by the communist NPA terrorists (CNTs) to attack a government infrastructure project on August 2, 2020 in Barangay Bales, Maasim, Sarangani Province.

An estimated 10 CNTs opened fire at the troops securing the area and the heavy equipment owned by Charifer Builders, the company undertaking the road concreting project of the government.

Government troops managed to return fire forcing the communist rebels to retreat following a brief exchange of gunfires.

The 37th IB troops are securing the government flagship project after the company received series of threats, when the contractor refused to pay extortion money demanded by the CNTs.

During clearing operation, 37th IB together with Maasim Municipal Police recovered a magazine of AK47 and various empty shells.

According the Lt. Col. Allen Van L. Estrera, Commanding Officer, 37th IB, the rebel group was identified to be under Johnny Casamorin alias Rayray of Far South Mindanao Region.

Joint Task Force Central Commander Maj. Gen. Diosdado C. Carreon said the JTFC will not allow the communist terrorist group to conduct violent attacks to disrupt the government projects that is vital in the development in the area.

“Our troops are continuously on heightened alert to provide for the needed security on our government projects prone to terrorist attacks,” Maj. Gen. Carreon said.
