SAN MIGUEL, Zamboanga del Sur, July 24 (PIA) - The people of Barangay Ocapan in San Miguel town will soon benefit from government programs and services after the ceremonial groundbreaking of three new ELCAC projects held on July 23 at the barangay's Multi-Purpose Hall here.
The rehabilitation and gravelling of Barangay Ocapan road has already been started by the joined efforts of the municipal government of San Miguel led by Hon. Mayor Angelito Martinez II, the Army's 53rd Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, and the Army's 547th Engineer Battalion led by Col. Emerito Pineda.
The construction of Brgy Ocapan Covered Court and Barangay Site Development followed shortly after.
In his remarks, San Miguel Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (MTF-ELCAC) Chairperson Hon. Mayor Martinez II said that the ELCAC projects are proof that the government has not forgotten the residents of Barangay Ocapan.
"You have seen, you have witnessed, and you have tasted the services rendered by the government - a result of true convergence," said Martinez.
Meanwhile, 2nd District Representative Leonardo Babasa encouraged the residents of Barangay Ocapan to support the programs of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in addressing the communist insurgency.
"Let us support our dear President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, and these programs and initiatives of the Municipal Task Force ELCAC and together, we will end the communist insurgecy," Babasa said.
Punong Barangay Erlynda Abansado thanked the San Miguel LGU and the Army for their help in the realization of these ELCAC projects.
"These projects set forth by the Municipal Task Force ELCAC, with the help of the Army, will not just address the insurgency in our barangay, but also help us and our children," said Abansado in local dialect.
Barangay Ocapan was a former safe haven of Communist-NPA terrorists in Zamboanga del Sur after being cleared of communist terrorist influence through the Army's Community Support Program (CSP).
Also, Keynote Speaker Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, the Commander of AFP's Western Mindanao Command, reiterated in his speech that 'no one lives and dies for himself alone."
"We should help each other for the attainment of peace and joy. We should all strive to be happy and productive citizens of our communities," said Lt. Gen. Sobejana.
Part of the whole-day activity was a Handog Serbisyo Caravan, which included medical services, free circumscion, bloodletting, free haircut, and free seeds from the Department of Agriculture-IX, and information briefing on courses offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-IX.
Also present in the ground breaking ceremony was Army's 1st Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Gene Ponio, 54th Engineer Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Anthony Cacayuran, 102nd Infantry Brigade Commander Col. Leonel Nicolas, 547th Engineer Battalion Commanding Officer Col.
