NABUNTURAN, Davao de Oro, March 18 (PIA) - - A firefight started at around 4:00AM Wednesday, March 18, between government troops and unidentified number of New People’s Army members in a barangay in Mabini.

According to Major Edson Abello of the 1001st Infantry Brigade, the focused military operation was triggered by a notice from a resident in the barangay informing our ground units of the presence of the NPA members.

Major Abello, civil military operations officer of the brigade, said that the exact location of the firefight cannot be disclosed yet as the operation is still on going.

“The military is in full control of the situation,” he said.

He also bared that five families, who are living near the encounter site, are now being evacuated, and their needs will be accommodated by the local government unit.

Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy emphasized that the the communist group is taking advantage that the military, and government agencies are focused right now on curtailing the spread of Corona Virus 2019 (COVID-19) in the province as the first patient, who was recorded as positive with the virus is from Pantukan.

“But the good thing is the community already denounced the NPA, that is why they tipped off the army of their presence in their area,” Governor Uy said.

The chief executive added that this is a result of the province’s dialogues with the communities and the municipal and barangays’ declaration of the CPP-NPA-NDF as persona non grata (PIAXI, Michael Uy)
