IMPASUGONG, Bukidnon, Jan. 29 (PIA) -- Assistance to Indigenous Peoples (IP) students continues with the peacekeeping efforts of the 8th Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Division (8IB, 4ID), Philippine Army.
The 8IB troopers again facilitated the delivery and distribution of packs of rice, canned goods, and sanitary pads to 198 IP students of Luyungan IP High School in Malaybalay City on Wednesday, January 29.
Under Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 62, IP Education (IPEd) Program recognizes the school as a beneficiary of various support projects from government and private organizations.
Having learned that the BukLOD (Bukidnon Lateral Organized for Development) has been helping the students of Luyungan IP High School, 8IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Ronald Illana coordinated smoothly with the group by proposing some ingenuity that could help the students sustain their daily healthy meal provision.
BukLOD is a group of business companies operating in Bukidnon province. A non-government organization (NGO) committed to help the students in said school thru its corporate social responsibility in order to contribute to the nation’s shared goals related to President Duterte’s Executive Order No. 70 (EO70).
Lt. Col. Ronald Illana looked into this situation and realized that intervention from this NGO is needed prompting him to tap the BUKLOD organization for more help.
Thus, in one of the meetings with 8IB, BukLOD committed through a Memorandum of Agreement to give monthly assistance to students.
It is the reason why the 8th IB army is collecting and transporting said aid—from its source to the IP school.

It was further proposed that the BUKLOD family would help students to have their own farm of Abaca, Dragon Fruit, and Adlai grains inside the campus for sustenance.
Taking in the proposal to be realized, the 8IB has prepared the planting materials and all other pieces of stuff to be used in planting abaca seedlings in the school campus this February.
With a thankful heart, school principal Edsel James Quemado commended the 8IB for their efforts and fortitude.
“The 8th IB army never ceased in helping this school. They evolved into a healthy helping organization. The students remained as strong as 198. There were no dropouts because they felt the love and support from other people. If aid did not come here, some students may have quitted school because almost all of them came from needy families of Bukidnon’s seven tribes,” Quemado said.
He said the students live inside the campus since classes started last year. They chanced to go home sometimes on weekend for food supplies and allowances, but in many cases, some of them could not come back to school on time due to scarcity.
“If we do not bring aid to these IP students, the CPP-NPA-NDF organizers may take up school infiltration using some issues to recruit more members. We believe that prevention is better than cure. So I’m urging all of us to act at once,” LtCol. Illana said.
With this condition, Luyungan IP High School—the sole IP High School in Southeast Asia located at Barangay Bangcud, Malaybalay City—is still open for those who want to extend some help to 198 IP students and let them pursue their dreams, he added. (8IB, PA/PIA Bukidnon)
