The municipal government officials of Butig, Lanao del Sur, surrendered four high-powered firearms in response to the military’s campaign against loose firearms, officials said Wednesday.

Butig is where the Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (ISIS)-inspired Maute group was founded, with brothers Abdullah and Omar Maute as the founding-leaders.

Lt. Col. Edgar Allan Villanueva, Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion commander, said the firearms consisting of a caliber 50 Barret sniper rifle, an M-203 grenade launcher, and two handguns, as well as magazines and ammunition, were surrendered to his command around 1 p.m. Monday

“The successful handing over of firearms was made possible through the concerted effort and intensified collaboration among our troops, local communities, local chief executives, and other stakeholders,” Villanueva said.

Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the surrender of the firearms is a result of the campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms “so that the locals would feel more secured and safe in their daily activities.”

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Bagnus Gaerlan Jr., Joint Task Force ZamPeLan acting commander, lauded the troops, the local government unit and stakeholders of Butig for the accomplishment.

“I urge everyone to continue our efforts in pursuing lasting peace not just for Mindanao but for the whole country. Let us conquer the challenges ahead of us and step up the momentum in sustaining our gains for our common aspiration,” Gaerlan said.
