Two foreign terrorists and one Abu Sayyaf Group member, believed to be suicide bombers, were neutralized by troops in Sulu yesterday afternoon, November 5.
Government forces also thwarted said personalities and the ASG under Mundi Sawadjaan from executing suicide bombing attack in Jolo, Sulu.
“Intelligence reports revealed that the group is planning of another suicide bombing attack in Jolo. This prompted us to launch a counter action. I tasked the 41st Infantry Battalion to intensify their checkpoint operation in Sitio Itawon, Barangay Kan Islam, Municipality of Indanan,” said Col. Ignatius Patrimonio, commander of the 1102nd Brigade.
Amid the conduct of checkpoint operation, troops were fired upon by 3 armed personalities onboard two motorcycle coming from Maimbung.
A running gun battle ensued which lasted for 5 minutes.
This resulted in the neutralization of the three personalities who were then identified as 2 foreign terrorists and 1 ASG member.
Recovered from their possession were 2 bomb vests, one Caliber. 45 pistol, and one Hand Grenade.
The neutralized personalities were immediately brought to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Office for the post mortem forensics to be conducted by the Scene of the Crime Operatives.
“This successful operation was complemented by the intensified conduct of intelligence operations and the quick response from our ground troops, thus preempting the enemies from executing their terror plan,” said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, WestMinCom commander.
“I enjoin each and every citizen to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious person or thing in their vicinity,” Lt. Gen. Sobejana added.
