A Philippine Army soldier was wounded in an encounter with suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Tan-awan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Patrolman John Imedio Javier of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6 (RMFB-6) sustained a gunshot wound on his right leg. He received treatment.

Based on the report of the military, troops of the RMFB-6 encountered at least 10 armed men in Sitio Basak, Barangay Tan-awan.

The gunfight with rebels which started around 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 9 lasted for some 15 minutes. The NPAs then withdrew towards northeast direction.


The Army soldiers were in the area as part of the pursuit operation in connection with the recent encounter of troops under 62nd Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army and 31st Division Reconnaissance Company, with rebels.

Seized from the site were a rifle grenade, two AK47 magazines, 117 rounds of 7.62-caliber bullets, electrical wires for an improvised explosive device, medical kits, and the rebels’ personal belongings.

The encounter was the third in a week in Negros Occidental following earlier clashes in Manjuyod and Himamaylan City.
