The upland village of Putian in Cuartero town, Capiz on Friday expressed its gratitude for its recent acquisition of a livelihood project lobbied by the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion’s (61IB) Community Support Program (CSP) teams.

Nes Fuyonan, Putian village chief, said Friday the CSP team played an important role for the project to be implemented.

The CSP teams’ deployment is meant not only to bring peace in conflict-affected villages but also to help address community-based issues.

The 61st IB and 301st Infantry Brigade on Tuesday headed the inauguration and blessing ceremony of the Grains Flatbed Mechanical Drier Project.

The project will benefit the growing 85 members of the Putian Farmers Association (PFA) based in the village.

“As village chief, I rendered resolutions to different offices for projects in our barangay but there is no assurance that we can get the projects that we need. The CSP teams had lobbied different government agencies for us and we are thankful that we have received the Grains Flatbed Mechanical Drier project,” Fuyonan said in a phone interview.

He said the local government unit, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), stakeholders, and the CSP teams have promptly responded to their request.

The Putian Farmers Association officials and members requested the project that was approved by DOLE-Capiz, which amounts to PHP800,000.

“This is just timely because two weeks from now, our farmers will start harvesting corn and rice. The project will then become operational,” he said.

Fuyonan is grateful for the impact the CSP teams left Putian as locals now have the confidence that the government is ready to listen and respond to their needs.

“The CSP teams even devoted their personal time and resources, even providing the needy locals of transportation fare when they go to town,” he said. Putian village has a population of about 1,300, Fuyonan said.

Lt. Col. Joel Benedict Batara, commander of the 61IB, said the granting of the project to Putian shows the dedication of the Army to help communities.

“This is a manifestation of the strong commitment of our government and your Philippine Army to help the geographically isolated and depressed communities. It only shows that the army is truly for the people, and the CSP is our tool to prove our sincerity in helping and addressing the socio-economic problems of these communities,” Batara said in a statement.

Aside from Putian, the CSP teams were also deployed to San Antonio, Carataya, and Mahunod-hunod villages of the same town.

The CSP deployment in these four villages resulted in the withdrawal of the 37 Militia ng Bayan (MB) members and 23 Mass Base supporters from Carataya, San Antonio and Mahunod-hunod from the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army in February.

In March, at least 49 Mass Base supporters from Sitio Tigpaka Daku, San Antonio also took their oath of allegiance to the government.
