PLACER, Surigao del Norte – On its 3rd consecutive year, Disaster Emergency Assistance and Rescue – 30th Infantry (Python) Battalion (DEAR 30IB) was declared, regional winner for the Government Emergency Response Management Services (GEMS) during the 2019 National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) culmination program on July 26, 2019 at LMX Convention Center, Bancasi, Butuan City.

The Gawad Kalasag (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) search for excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and Humanitarian Assistance is an annual activity conducted every National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) to recognize its stakeholders. It is their mechanism in obtaining sustained commitment and support by recognizing exceptional contributions of DRRM practitioners in strengthening the resilience and adaptive capacities of nations and communities to disaster risks according to Office of Civil Defense -13.

For its best practices in implementing its DRRM programs aimed at protecting and shielding high risk communities against hazard, 30IB again won the award. One of its activity is the participation of the DEAR 30IB to the 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army Squad and (Disaster Response Operation) DRO Challenge Competition resulted to 3 consecutive years as Grand Slam Champion for year 2015,2016, and 2017. For the year 2018 during the Tropical Storm “Basyang” the DEAR platoon conducted Disaster Relief Operation and save lives of 21,044 individuals in the area. With all challenges posed by natural and man-made catastrophes to the population within its area of responsibility, the 30IB of the Army emphasized its Disaster Risk Reduction Operations on the organization of DEAR 30IB unit. As the readily deployable rescue force during disaster and emergency situations.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey A Villarosa, Acting Commanding Officer, 30IB on his acceptance speech said, “This award would not be made possible without the supportive efforts of our counterparts from the Local Government Units (LGU) and our local DRROs, with particular mention on the Surigao City DRRO, SDN Provincial DRRO and the Surigao City DRRMC. It is recognitions such as this that refills our energies and reinvigorates our spirits to serve our people. However, winner or no winner, may I once again reaffirm the Python trooper’s commitment and dedication to render our services to the wonderful and peace-loving people of CARAGA, particularly the people in the area of operation of our unit.”

Moreover, Lt. Col. Villarosa stated that 30IB will not just perform their traditional function of winning the peace but it will also be always ready to render humanitarian assistance and disaster response. He also added the need to continously hone and enhance skills and level of readiness not just in disaster response & relief operations, but more so on disaster risk reduction to mitigate hazards in times of calamities.

30IB’s area of operation includes Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands.
