The Eastern Front of the Communist Party of the Philippines- New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) recruits members as young as 10 to 14 years old, the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) said on Wednesday.
Last July 5, the Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) encountered around 15 members of the Eastern Front at President Roxas town in Capiz province.
In a press conference at Camp Delgado on Wednesday, Capt. Cenon Pancito III, chief of the 3ID Public Affairs Office, said the subversive documents recovered from the encounter have provided the government troops valuable information on rebels’ tactics.
Formerly the Sangay sa Partido sa Platoon (SPP)-East, Komiteng Rehiyon – Panay, Pancito said the documents recovered show that they had changed their name into “Eastern Front".
He said the Eastern Front “recruits more” because they were weakened in the previous years”.
“They use President Roxas as their training ground,” he said.
In the same press conference, Lt. Hazel Durotan, Civil-Military Operations (CMO) officer of the 61IB, said the rebel group was “focused” on recruiting minors aged 10-14.
“Mostly they recruit minors aged 10 to 14. This is alarming because these minors are supposed to be attending school but the rebels are ruining their future,” Durotan said.
She said cellular phones recovered from the July 5 encounter were inspected by information technology personnel and has provided the Army with such information.
“They (youth) are adventurous and they want to take hold of firearms,” she said, adding that the rebels use the “adventurous” nature of the youth to persuade them to join the rebel group.
The Army targetted their “consolidation area” and were fortunate to locate their hideout in President Roxas.
“We are thankful for the help of the populace that helped us track their location,” he said.
Despite their recruitment, Pancito said the Eastern Front is not a potential threat to Panay island.
“We consider them as an insignificant group because the Eastern Front has weak strength as of now,” he said.
The 61IB is still tracking the location of the rebels who fled towards Barangay Badiangon of President Roxas after the encounter.
Citing their reliable source, Pancito said the 61IB has inflicted casualties on the rebels' side. “There are indicators that they suffer heavy casualty,” he said.
No casualty was recorded on the government side.
The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
