CAMP DANGWA, Benguet – The Police Regional Office Cordillera (PROCOR) on Wednesday awarded medals to the wounded and the families of the two police officers who were killed in a recent firefight with members of the New People's Army (NPA) terrorists.

“In recognition of the courageous actions and bravery of the 10 police officers who were wounded and killed during the clash against the members of the New People’s Army terrorists, PROCOR Regional Director, Police Brigadier Israel Ephraim T. Dickson personally bestowed their awards during his visit in the morning of April 3, 2019 at the hospital in Mountain Province,” said Carolina Lacuata, Regional information office chief, on Thursday.

Dickson awarded the wounded personnel who are undergoing treatment at a medical facility in Mt. Province.

Those awarded with the PNP wounded personnel medal or the “Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting” were Patrolman Erwin Calixto, Police Cpl. Marcelo Bayeng, Cpl. Ramadick Meloy, Cpl. Clifford Gama, Cpl. Edwin Keya, Cpl. John Calcaligong, Cpl. Terence L. Dulnuan, Police Staff Sgt. Salvador Agalatiw, and Police Master Sgt. Alphedes Alvaro.

The PNP heroism medal or the “Medalya ng Kadakilaan” will also be posthumously awarded to Cpl. Marloun Casil, which will be received by his heirs.

They were the latest casualties in the skirmish with the terrorist rebels at Bauko town.

The remains of Casil was brought home by his relatives to his residence in Kibungan, Benguet.

Government troops were wounded and killed after an anti-personnel mine (APM) exploded while pursuing the communist terrorists who initially killed one and wounded another on March 29. The use of APMs is banned by international humanitarian law (IHL).

Aside from the awards, the policemen also received an initial financial assistance from Dickson to help defray their hospital expenses.

Lacuata said other benefits from the PNP are also being processed.

The first two police officers who were killed and injured have been visited by no less than PNP chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde, on Saturday.

Dickson has ordered policemen in the region to be on alert and initiate appropriate security preparations to prevent a repeat of the said incident in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Massive clearing and pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels are now being undertaken in all areas of Mountain Province and nearby provinces.
