AFP expresses grief over death of MILF vice chair Ghazali Jaafar

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 13, 2019): AFP expresses grief over death of MILF vice chair Ghazali Jaafar

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) extended its condolences to the family and friends of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) first vice chairperson for political affairs Ghazali Jaafar, who died early Wednesday.

"Vice Chair Jaafar has been instrumental to the quest for peace in Mindanao as AFP’s dependable partner in that elusive aspiration. His insights and dedication as a person and as a peace advocate will be his enduring legacy -- not only to the Bangsamoro people but to the entire nation as well. For those whom he left behind, the pursuit for peace continues until its fruition," AFP spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said in a message to reporters.

The Department of National Defense (DND) also expressed grief over Jaafar's death.

"His fight for peace will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on with the successful implementation of the Bangsamoro Organic Law. May Allah grant him rest in Jannah," the DND said in a statement.

At around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jaafar succumbed to a lingering illness at the Metro Davao Medical and Research Center, where he was admitted last Monday.

The Jaafar family spokesperson, Prof. Raby Angkal, said the remains of the Moro revolutionary leader will be brought home to Sitio Tapuken, Barangay Pigcalagan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, where he will be buried according to Muslim rites.

Jaafar served as Chairman of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission and was a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority.
