Abu neutralized by security forces in Tawi-Tawi

An Abu Sayyaf Group member was neutralized by the combined elements of the AFP and PNP during the conduct of checkpoint operations in Barangay Lapid-Lapid, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi on Tuesday (February 5, 2019).

Troops from the 29th Marine Company, Marine Battalion Landing Team-9; 51st Special Action Company, Special Action Force; Bongao Municipal Police Station; Maritime Police Station Tawi-Tawi; and with orchestration of Joint Intelligence Task Units, conducted Law Enforcement Support Operation when they chanced upon Shaifful Julaili, a Sulu-based ASG member involved in the series of kidnapping activities in the waters off Tawi-Tawi and Sabah.

Julaili violently escaped and engaged the government troops manning the checkpoint, prompting the latter to retaliate and fatally wound the suspect.

Said Abu member was declared dead-on-arrival at the provincial hospital.

The intensified checkpoint operations of the Joint Task Force Tawi-tawi and the PNP is done primarily to preempt the spillover of terror activities from the province of Sulu to Tawi-Tawi.

The checkpoint serves as one of the proactive measures of the government to thwart plans of the Sulu-based ASG/KFRG members in utilizing the province as their safe haven and platform in the conduct of their high profile kidnappings.

“Rest assured that our government troops will never fail to protect the people from any threat that will try to disrupt the peace and development in the province of Tawi-Tawi,” said Lieutenant General Arnel B. Dela Vega, commander of the Western Mindanao Command.
