Rebel-affected brgys 68

From the Visayan Daily Star (Feb 8, 2019): Rebel-affected brgys 68

There are now 68 remaining insurgency-affected barangays in Negros Island, the bulk of which are in Negros Occidental.

Col. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, yesterday reported that there are 59 insurgency-affected barangays in Negros Occidental, while Brig. Ignacio Madriaga, 302nd Infantry Brigade commanding officer, said nine barangays in Negros Oriental are also affected by the activities of communist rebels.

Madriaga said six of them are in Guihulngan City and three in Mabinay, while the remaining barangays are being threatened for infiltration by communist rebels.

There are 661 barangays in Negros Occidental, and 557 in Negros Oriental.

While Col. Jon Aying was the 303rd Infantry Brigade commander in 2013, he reported that there were 105 barangays in Negros that had been affected by the activities of the New People’s Army
Arevalo said yesterday that those insurgency-affected villages are under close monitor, including the conduct of security operations, while community support programs are being implemented.

There are 125 barangays in four Panay provinces also categorized by the Philippine Army as insurgency-affected.
It was also reported by the 3rd Infantry Division that 88 New People’s Army members in Western Visayas surrendered last year to the Philippine Army.
