Army corporal dies in Or. Mindoro clash

From the Manila Bulletin (Sep 11): Army corporal dies in Or. Mindoro clash

CAMP NAKAR, Quezon — An army corporal was killed in an encounter between soldiers and a band of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro the other day.

The Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) identified that slain soldier as Corporal Romeric Urbiztondo, of the army’s 4th Infantry Battalion (4IB).

Urbiztondo was among the troopers who engaged NPA rebels in a 45-minute gun battle in Sitio Panahulugan, Barangay Panaytayan, Mansalay at 6:50 a.m. last Monday.

Lt. Col. Dennis C. Gutierrez, 4IB commanding officer, said he believes there were also casualties on the rebel side as evidenced by blood stains found by soldiers along the guerrillas’ escape route.

During the clearing operation, the 4IB recovered war materials and equipment like an improvised explosive device (IED), a laptop, computer hard drive, five cellular phones, and two backpacks containing medical supplies, documents and personal effects.

Lt. Gen. Danilo Pamonag, SOLCOM commander, said soldiers continue to pursue the fleeing rebels.
