More troops expected to arrive to defeat NPAs in Davao region

From the Mindanao Times (Jan 25): More troops expected to arrive to defeat NPAs in Davao region

UNITS under the 901st Infantry Brigade will be deployed to the 10th Infantry Division to help crush the New People’s Army in the region.

Col. Ernesto Torres, the commander of 1003rd Infantry Brigade, told reporters yesterday in the AFP-PNP press conference held at Royal Mandaya hotel, that the brigade will help the three existing battalions in counter-insurgency operations against the New People’s Army.

“The 56th IB is expected to come first week of February,” he added.

The 1003rd brigade has existing three battalions, the 3rd IB based in Malagos, Calinan district, 16th IB based in Barangay New Visayas, Sto. Tomas, Davao Del Norte and the newly activated 89th IB.

The 1003rd brigade covers Davao City, Sto. Tomas, Island Garden City of Samal, Braulio E. Dujali , all in Davao Del Norte.

Earlier, Lt. Gen. Rolando Bautista, the commanding general of the Philippine Army, said the Davao Region is crucial because it’s where seasoned and veteran fighters of CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army) operate.

“So the soldiers must be psychologically, physically (able), and at the same time, they should be prepared in combating the NPAs,” he added.

In December last year, the 15th Infantry Battalion arrived in the region and placed under the operational control of the 1002nd Infantry brigade.

In October last year, more than 200 members of the Philippine Army’s 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion (2SRB) returned to the region after five months of fighting against the Maute-ISIS terrorist group in Marawi City.

Upon arrival in the city, the 2SRB soldiers were placed under the operational control of the Eastern Mindanao Command.
