Rebels burn DOLE processor

From the Mindanao Times (Nov 4): Rebels burn DOLE processor

ALLEGED members of the New People’s Army (NPA) burned down a portable banana processor of the DOLE Philippines, Inc. in Sitio Sta. Cruz, Barangay Casisang, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon around 1 a.m. yesterday.

Capt. Joe Patrick Martinez, the spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Division, told TIMES that the DOLE packing plant was burned down by undetermined numbers of the NPAs, belonging to the Guerilla Front Committee 68 in Northern Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCRMC).

Martinez said the incident is another violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), committed by the communist group.

The CARHRIHL was signed by both the national government and the National Democratic Front (NDF) in 1998, in which both agreed that civilians, together with their properties, shall not be an object of attack.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the civil-military operations officer of 403rd Infantry Brigade, told Times that around 50 company workers are directly affected by the attack.

“What we are more concerned about is the impact of such atrocities to the workers who depend their daily income from the DOLE,” Tagros said. “We hope they will not loss their job.”

Tagros said they are looking into extortion as the possible motive of the burning.

After the initial investigation, it was estimated that the damage reached P700,000.

The military officer also urged the public to report immediately to authorities if they witness such atrocities.

The public is asked to report to their hotline number 0927 406 0183.
