‘Sir TY’ is new Nolcom chief

From Malaya Business Insight (Sep 4): ‘Sir TY’ is new Nolcom chief

PRESIDENT Duterte has named Marines commandant Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat as new commander of the Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom), a key military unit based in Tarlac City.

Salamat is due to assume the post today. He succeeds fellow Marines officer, Lt. Gen. Romeo Tanalgo, who is bowing out of service as he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56 tomorrow.

The new Marines commandant has yet to be announced but sources said the frontrunner is Brig. Gen. Alvin Parreño, Marines deputy commandant, and a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1986.
Armed Forces spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla described Salamat, his classmate at the PMA Class of 1985, as a seasoned and a battle-hardened military officer.

“He is principled, idealistic but focused and determined. That is his persona,” said Padilla of Salamat, his PMA classmate. “As a Marine officer, he is well-seasoned, battle-hardened and deeply devoted to his troops.”

Salamat, referred to by subordinates as “Sir TY” (Thank You), was named Marines chief last February. Before that, he was the No. 2 man or assistant superintendent of the PMA based in Baguio City. He also served as commander of the 1st Marine Brigade based in Sultan Kudarat. It was in that capacity that he accomplished a major feat against the Ansar Al-Khilafah in Palimbang town in November 2015. The joint operation with the police resulted in the killing of four AKP members, including Indonesian Ibrahim Ali, alias Abu Fattah, and the recovery of a cache of firearms and improvised explosive devices.

AFP public affairs chief Col. Edgard Arevalo, also of the Marines, said Salamat is a fellow of the Center for Defense and Strategic Studies of the Australian Defense College, “which equips its students with the competency to operate at the strategic level,” and he has a masters degree from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia.
