Troops kill 2 suspected NPA rebels in Isabela clash

From GMA News (Aug 28): Troops kill 2 suspected NPA rebels in Isabela clash

Two suspected New People's Army rebels were killed following a clash with government forces in Isabela early Monday morning, a military statement said.

A statement from the Army's 86th Infantry Battalion said around 4:30 a.m., patrolling elements of the battalion's Alpha Company engaged an undetermined number of communist rebels at Sitio Lumalog in Barangay Cadsalan in San Mariano town.

The operating troops recovered a shotgun and a .22 caliber rifle from the rebels. No casualties were reported on the side of the operating troops.

Authorities are determining the identities of the two slain insurgents.

Lieutenant Colonel Jose Caraga condoled with the families of the rebel fatalities, but called on the insurgents in the area to give themselves up and avoid similar incidents in the future.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines have been on hold since July following the attacks on government forces.
