Navies of Philippines and Vietnam conducted the third third personnel interaction in Pugad Island (Southwest Cay) which is part of Kalayaan (Spratly) Islands. Pugad Island (Southwest Cay) is under the control of Vietnam.

Naval Forces West (NAVFORWEST) personnel represented the Philippine Navy to interact with Vietnam People’s Navy on June 22 for the said confidence building activity.

“The Philippine Navy delegation was led by Colonel Camilo F. Balutan PN(M)(GSC), the Deputy Commander for Marine Operations, Naval Forces West and Commander Virgilio C. De Guzman PN (GSC), Acting Commanding Officer, BRP Andres Bonifacio (FF17) as platform of ship to shore movement,” NAVFORWEST said. “The Vietnam delegation was led by Senior Captain Nguyen Viet Thuan, Deputy Commander of the Naval Region 4, Vietnam People’s Navy.”

The two navies shared information about Search and Rescue missions, Maritime security, Disaster prevention at sea and enhancement on communication between the two Islands.

“In addition, sports activities were also conducted such as football, volleyball, tug-of-war and Vietnam Navy rendered musical entertainment during the closing ceremony,” NAVFORWEST said.

The Filipino navy also visited statue of Tran Hung Dao, a lighthouse and a pagoda.

“The two countries expect that personnel interactions will contribute to consolidating and promoting friendly relations, creating a friendly environment of mutual understanding between the two navies in general and the two units of the two countries stationed on the two islands in particular,” NAVFORWEST said.
