From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 7): Meetings, engagements key to conflict resolution - Lorenzana
Had the Europeans calmly talked among themselves, then the bloody conflict known as the First World One would have not happened.
This was stressed by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during his short address to participants in the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials Meeting held in Cebu this week.
"A hundred years ago, countries in Europe went to war without thinking of the consequences. The end result (is the First World War and its horrendous casualties). If people talked more like, we are doing now, they could have prevented that," he added.
Lorenzana was referring to constant engagement between defense and civilian stakeholders of the ASEAN member states.
"We aim to improve our work in the process and find ways to address future challenges in the most efficient and effective way possible," the defense official stressed.
Lorenzana said close cooperation between ASEAN members is urgently needed as the world has now turned into a global community thus good relationships are needed for the betterment of everyone.
"We have to develop relationships because that is the only way we can progress ourselves," he added.
The First World War or or the War to End All Wars, was a global war that originated in Europe from July 28, 1914 to Nov. 11, 1918.
More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history.
Over nine million combatants and seven million civilians died as a result of the war.
