Maritime command center to rise in Ipil

Sun Star-Zamboanga (Apr 5): Maritime command center to rise in Ipil

A MARITIME command center to be funded by the United States (US) Government is set to be established in Ipil town, Zamboanga Sibugay.

"The Provincial Board has already passed a resolution supporting the establishment of a maritime command center in the province," said Board Member Eufemio Vic Javier in an interview with Sunstar Philippines.

The maritime center, under the Philippine National Police, is part of the government's program to combat piracy and terrorism.

Javier said the grant, worth P30 million, is eyed to be implemented this year in one of the coastal barangays of Ipil town.

Most likely, Javier said, the maritime center will be located in Barangay Caparan, Ipil -- one of the areas of concern of the municipality.

The maritime center will beef up security measures to prevent the activities of terrorists, smugglers, pirates, and other criminal gangs in the province.

"It is a big help for the province in maintaining peace and order and to combat criminality," Javier said.

Aside from Ipil, the City Government of Zamboanga will also receive from the US Government the US$1 million for the establishment of a Maritime Command Center.

The grant was announced by US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Y. Kim during his visit to the city last month.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said the center will be established in Barangay Bolong, a coastal barangay located 32 kilometers east of the city.

"The city of Zamboanga expressed its gratitude to the US government for its continued support," Climaco-Salazar said.
