K9s undergo bomb detection challenge

From the Mindanao Times (Mar 8): K9s undergo bomb detection challenge

TWENTY police dogs from the different security forces in the city yesterday competed in the Ultimate K9 challenge 2017 held at the headquarters of the Task Force Davao in Sta. Ana wharf.

The competition aimed to test the capability of the K9s to detect explosives as the city is strengthening its security measure for the 80th Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

The dogs were from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Philippine Coastguard-Davao, the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC), Central 911, Philippine Army, Tactical Operations Group (TOG) XI, Philippine Air force, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Presidential Security Group (PSG).

Brig. Gen. Gilbert Gapay, the commander of Joint Task Force Haribon (JTF), said the activity aimed to test the preparedness of the K9 units in addressing threats of terrorism particularly in explosive detection.

“This is part of the security preparations for the celebration of Araw ng Dabaw,” said Gapay.

While stressing that they have not received direct threat from lawless or terrorist groups, Gapay said they are letting their guard down.

“It’s also a way of enhancing camaraderie and teamwork among the different units in the security sector,” he added.

The K9s underwent three different bomb detection stages. They were challenged to detect bomb hidden in vehicle, package and baggage and on ground/field.

Gapay said the challenge also tested the limitations and weaknesses of the K9 unit.

“With this, we can strengthen their capability,” Gapay said.

Col. Erwin Bernard Neri, the Task Force Davao commander, said the competition showed the importance of being prepared to ensure the safety and secure the month-long celebration of the city. Today, a counter terrorism simulation exercise will also be conducted at the Task Force Davao headquarters. The TFD hosted the event.
