BARANGAY MUTI, Zamboanga City (DWDD) – Philippine Navy (PN) component composed of intelligence, fast crafts and naval special operations personnel, together with police forces, had an encounter with the members of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) under ASG sub-leader Marzan Ajijul, while conducting maritime patrol in the vicinity of Sitio Niyog-Niyog, Barangay Muti, Zamboanga City around noontime today.

The joint elements of PN and PNP sighted motorized pump boat around the said area with 2 suspected ASG conducting extortion activities to small scale fishermen when they were intercepted.

The 2 ASGs resisted when confronted and opened fire that made the joint element to return fire. The firefight lasted for about fifteen minutes that resulted to the neutralization of the 2 ASG members and the recovery of a Cal.45 pistol, hand grenade, and a heat sealed crystalline substance, suspected to be “shabu.” Also recovered is the watercraft utilized with markings “Irsan” with 13 Horsepower Single Engine onboard.

There are no casualties on the government side.

The PN will continue conducting intensified maritime patrols together with other maritime agencies in order to address the illegal activities victimizing our fishermen and commercial vessels. NPAO / MCAG
