Most recruits of the Abu Sayyaf Group come from the youth sector who have run afoul of the law.

In a cellphone video confirmed by a News5 source from Joint Task Force Sulu, some youngsters were seen firing high-powered firearms at soldiers, reloading guns and being hit in an encounter with government troops at Sitio Bastiyung, Barangay Bungkaong, Patikul.

Sulu Governor Toto Tan said the young members of the ASG are not minors but in their 20s, are natives of Jolo, and have opted to join the bandit group because they are running from the law.

Not less than 7,000 troops have been deployed in Sulu for the intensifed military offensive against the terrorist group.

Sunday night, cannon fire was heard again after the bandits were spotted in Patikul.
Soldiers are on guard in neighboring provinces in case the fleeing Abu Sayyaf bandits hide there.

Marine Col. Custodio Parcon Jr., commander of Task Force Tawi-Tawi, said, “There should be a ripple effect on neighboring provinces. That’s normal. Common sense will tell you na mangyayari talaga yun (that’s inevitable). And for us in Tawi-Tawi we would like to let them [the ASG] know that when they will attempt to go to Tawi-Tawi, they're gonna die.”
