Vice President Jusuf Kalla said in Jakarta on Friday (12/08) that the Indonesian government is making all efforts to free eleven Indonesian citizens taken hostage by armed groups in the Philippines and Malaysia, though no significant progress has been made so far.
Kalla said the efforts include negotiations carried out by the government and private parties, among them employers of the abducted Indonesians.
As the Philippine military continued operations to free ten Indonesian hostages in Southern Philippines from the Abu Sayyaf armed group, the government calls on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to put extra effort.
"The Philippine government has already conducted massive military operations in Sulu, Southern Philippines. We rely on them to free the hostages as soon as possible," Kalla said.
Earlier, Indonesian Military chief Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo announced Indonesian special forces soldiers are on standby to be deployed to Southern Philippines to free the hostages if needed.
