Suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels shot and killed an Ata tribal leader and his companion in Panabo City, Davao del Norte province Wednesday afternoon.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry Division Spokesperson, identified the fatalities as Datu Ruben Labawan, 42, a tribal leader of the Ata in Paquibato District and Romeo Tanio, 49.

He added the two were motoring along the national highway in Panabo City when suspected NPAs, aboard two motorcycles, shot the victims several times, killing them instantly at around 4 p.m.

Prior to the shooting, Labawan and Tanio, together with other leaders of the Ata-Manobo tribe and representatives of the national and local government agencies attended a convergence forum and consultation organized by the National Commission for Indigenous People (NCIP) XI at RJ3 Restaurant in Panabo City.

The meeting discussed the implementation of a pilot project for the lumads called Slope Agriculture Land Technology.

Pursuit operations against the suspects are ongoing, Batchar said.
