Four armed men shot dead a businessman inside a cockfighting
arena at Barangay Aguada, Placer, Masbate , at
3:20 p.m. Saturday.
A police report identified the victim as Rene Ponpon, 45,
and resident of Barangay Centro Aguada, Placer, who sustained gunshot wounds
from a .45-caliber pistol and a .357-caliber magnum handgun based on the
recovered empty shells in the crime scene.
The report said Placer Municipal Police Station personnel
are focusing their investigation on the business angle as based on their
findings, Ponpon was allegedly involved in the operation of cattle rustling and
fencing of small animals in their town.
The series of recent killings in the island province,
especially right after the May 9 elections and the Regional Special Operations
Task Group Masbate had withdrawn from the province, has alarmed its residents.
