From the Philippine News Agency (May 26): Goldberg to lead Memorial Day rites in Taguig City

United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip S. Goldberg will lead the Memorial Day ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Sunday.

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May which honors the men and women who were killed while serving in the US Armed Forces.

Originally named Decoration Day, the holiday originated in the years following the American Civil War. It was named Memorial Day by federal law in 1971.

Philippine government officials, representatives from the diplomatic and consular corps, and members of the American and Filipino veterans’ communities will participate in the program of remembrance, honoring those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and democracy.
