Bomb explosion in Lamitan injures teenager

Sun Star-Zamboanga (May 16): Bomb explosion in Lamitan injures teenager

A TEENAGER was wounded while power supply was cut off when an improvised bomb exploded in Lamitan City, Basilan province, the police reported.

The police said the incident took place around 8:40 p.m., Sunday, in front of a hospital in the village of Limook, Lamitan City, Basilan.

The police identified the victim as Francisco Jacinto, 16, a resident of Limook village. The victim was rushed to the hospital and later transferred to a medical facility in Zamboanga City.

The police said the explosion has plunged Lamitan City into darkness since the improvised bomb toppled down an electric post in front of the Ediborah Yap hospital.

The hospital, which was formerly known as the Lamitan District Hospital, was named after Yap, one of the four nurses the Abu Sayyaf seized from Saint Peter Hospital during the 2001 Lamitan siege.

The Abu Sayyaf killed Yap during a rescue military operation in the same year.

Authorities strongly believe the Abu Sayyaf Group was behind the incident.
