Major Gen. Gerardo Barrientos was appointed as the new head
of Joint Task Group Sulu on Tuesday.
He replaced Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, who has assumed
full-time command of the 501st Infantry Brigade.
At the same time, Rear Admiral Jorge Amba was appointed head
of Joint Task Group Tawi-Tawi.
"As part of this headquarters' effort to streamline our
ongoing operations, ensure coverage of all operational areas and synchronize
current efforts, we have appointed Major Gen. Gerardo Barrientos as the new
Joint Task Group-Jolo Commander and Rear Admiral Jorge Amba as head of Joint
Task Group Tawi-Tawi," said WMC spokesperson Major Filemon Tan.
This is to allow brigade commanders in the WMC roster to
focus on assigned tasks in light of new security challenges in the area, he
added.
Recently, Abu Sayyaf Group bandits and other lawless
elements abducted several Indonesian and Malaysian seafarers in Philippine
waters bordering these countries.
Barrientos is currently the commander of the 1st Infantry
Division, which also covers the whole area of Zambales, Basilan, Sulu and
Tawi-Tawi and has under his command division level resources.
Amba commands all fleet-marine units and all naval assets of
the entire Naval Forces Western Mindanao.
"We are optimistic that this change will bring concrete
results to our efforts," Tan said.
