71st anniversary of Nasugbu Beach landing commemorated

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 1): 71st anniversary of Nasugbu Beach landing commemorated

Ranking military and civilian officials commemorated on Sunday the 71st anniversary of the Landing of the Allied Forces in Nasugbu, Batangas that eventually led to the successful campaign to end Japanese occupation in World War II.

Incidentally, American and Filipino landing took place at Nasugbu Beach, also in the same locality.

Among the participating Allied units were the United States Eighth Army and the Filipino 47th ROTC Division.

American forces were led by Lt. Gen. Albert Eichelberger while the Filipino units were commanded by Col. Terry Adevoso.

This operation helped turned the tide of war in favor of American forces in the Philippines and paved the way for the liberation of South Manila and the Southern Luzon provinces of Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas from troops of the Imperial Japanese Army.

The 5 a.m. amphibious landing of troops and tons of military equipment and supplies was ordered by Gen. Douglas MacArthur to "establish a line of advance on Manila from the southwest."

By afternoon of Jan. 31, 1945, Nasugbu was completely liberated and there was a long procession of people who returned to their homes in the poblacion.

Sunday's commemorative activities were spearheaded by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator Ernesto G. Carolina, Veterans Federation of the Philippines President Col. Bonifacio G. De Garcia, Nasugbu Mayor Rosario M. Apacible and former Justice Secretary Leila De Lima
