From GMA News (Dec 28): Two Marines dead, one injured in Sulu attack by suspected Abu Sayyaf

Two soldiers from the 22nd Marine Company were killed while another one was injured when suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels attacked their camp in Sulu on Monday.

The rebels conducted the attack at around 2 a.m. in Sitio Palan, Brgy. Mampallan in Talipao at around 2 a.m., Maj. Filemon Tan, spokesman of the military's Western Mindanao Command, said.

A brief firefight occurred, then the armed group withdrew with an undetermined number of casualties, Tan said.

The military is still pursuing the rebels as of posting time.

The rebel group has several foreign and Filipino hostages in Sulu, among them a Dutch wildlife photographer who was abducted in February 2012 in Tawi-Tawi.
