Maximum tolerance not an excuse for demonstrators to hurt police officers guarding APEC meeting

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 19): Maximum tolerance not an excuse for demonstrators to hurt police officers guarding APEC meeting

Maximum tolerance is not an excuse for demonstrators to deliberately hurt police officers tasked to secure the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) Leaders' Summit.

This was stressed by Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor during the APEC Security Task Force briefing Thursday.

"Maximum tolerance is (a) high-degree of restraint in (a) particular situation. (It also allows police officers) to use the proper response (in a given situation)," he added.

And in layman's terms, it means that police officers must maximize their patience in dealing with unruly protesters.

In the case of the ongoing APEC meeting, Mayor said PNP head Director General Ricardo Marquez has directed the police to block protesters planning to penetrate cordons securing APEC venues, instead of dispersing them violently.

However, this does not mean that police hurt in the line-of-duty cannot file charges against their attackers.

Mayor said that the PNP is still determining the number of police officers hurt during clashes with demonstrators during the duration of the APEC meeting.
