2 troopers killed, 3 hurt in Samar ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 28): 2 troopers killed, 3 hurt in Samar ambush

New People's Army (NPA) bandits shot and killed two soldiers and wounded three others during an ambush at Barangay Lagundi, Catbalogan City, Samar Friday night.

In the same attack, the rebels also stole Php1.8 million worth of subsistence allowance intended for soldiers of the 14th Infantry Battalion.

The attack took place at 7:40 p.m., 8th Infantry Division spokesperson Capt. Isagani Viernes said.

The soldiers led by 1Lt. Cherwin B. Lapura, aboard a KM-450 vehicle, were traveling along Maharlika Highway on their way back to base, when the vehicle hit a rebel-laid landmine, killing two troopers and wounding three others.

Not content, the NPAs then looted the crippled truck and fallen troopers of valuables and combat equipment.

Reinforcing units from the military and police hurriedly responded to the scene and recovered assorted empty shells of different calibers, including that of an AK-47 rifle, and fragments of landmines made from PVC pipe and cuttings of steelbar.

Viernes said the 8th Infantry Division strongly condemned the treacherous acts of the NPAs which were in gross violations of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) by the NPA to which the communist group was a signatory.

CARHRIHL provides that parties involved in the agreement should affirm and apply the principles of international humanitarian law in order to protect the civilian population and individual civilians, as well as persons deprived of their liberty for reasons related to the armed conflict and also guarantees the right against economic and food blockades and indiscriminate bombings, shelling, strafing, gunfire and the use of landmines.

The wounded soldiers are now recuperating at Camp Lukban Station Hospital and are in stable condition.

Pursuit operation is still ongoing. Names of the casualties are being withheld prior notification of their immediate families.
