Bomb experts detonate 3 IEDs planted on NGCP tower in Cotabato

From GMA News (Oct 18): Bomb experts detonate 3 IEDs planted on NGCP tower in Cotabato

Military bomb experts successfully detonated at least three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) attached to a National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) steel tower in Carmen, Cotabato on Sunday evening, a top police official said.

According to North Cotabato Police Provincial Office (NCPPO) spokesperson Superintendent Bernard Tayong, unidentified suspects planted at least three improvised explosive devices at the foot of steel tower number 110 in Barangay Tacupan in Carmen town.

The IEDs were fashioned from 60-mm mortars with a mobile phone as command detonator.

Tayong said the IEDs were found by a farmer in Sitio Balas, Barangay Tacupan at around 7:45 p.m.

“The farmer immediately informed village officials that also called police assistance to cordon off the area,” Tayong said.

He added that it cannot be determined yet whether the same suspects are responsible for planting IEDs at the NGCP's steel towers in the town of Pikit, also in North Cotabato on October 10.

“Investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the group behind this latest attact,” he said.

Authorities believe that the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were the ones behind the toppling of the NGCP towers in Pikit.
