‘Caucasian’ clash casualty in video is her husband, SAF widow says

From GMA News (Sep 17):  ‘Caucasian’ clash casualty in video is her husband, SAF widow says

A widow of one of the slain members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force said the Caucasian-looking man in video footage that recently surfaced is her late husband.

In a report on GMA's “QRT” on Thursday, widow Virgie Viernes said there was no doubt that the man in the video was none other than her husband, PO1 Oliver Viernes, a SAF trooper.

There had been reports of an American soldier among the casualties of the Mamasapano clash, which happened during a covert SAF operation against international terrorists in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao.

The US Embassy has repeatedly denied that American soldiers were on the ground during the operation and the firefight that followed.

Still, Viernes said she was in favor of reopening the investigation of the Mamasapano case particularly with the involvement of the president, former PNP chief Alan Purisima and retired SAF chief Getulio Napeñas Jr. in the incident.

On January 25, SAF troopers stormed Mamasapano in Maguindanao to neutralize Marwan. They were successful in the operation but at the cost of the lives of 44 SAF troopers.
