Contrary to their claims, New People's Army (NPA) rebels are
not really for justice and equality, said Philippine Army (PA) chief Lt. Gen.
Eduardo Año.
"Just look at the areas, the NPAs have infiltrated,
they have killed many civilians, caused the destruction of private and public
property," the PA chief added.
And to prevent this from happening again, Año said that the
public, especially those living in the countryside communities, must be made
aware of the rebels' violent and aggressive nature.
This can be done by using "social pressure" as
part of its efforts to totally neutralize the insurgency threat in the
countryside.
Año defines social pressure as efforts exerted by
stakeholders and government organizations in convincing rebel fighters to
abandon the insurgency movement, voluntarily surrender their arms and return to
mainstream society.
And in return, these former rebels will be provided with
livelihood opportunities and development projects for their communities.
Año said that once these former insurgents get prosperous
living their peaceful lives, then they are sending a message that living in
peace is much better than conducting crimes and atrocities to the communities.
The PA chief said that this initiative is much better than
hunting down and killing the estimated 4,000 rebel fighters remaining in the
country.
